Movements & Calibers
A movement is a chain: stored energy is released through a gear train, metered by an escapement, and paced by a balance wheel. These are the parts that decide whether a watch runs, how long it runs, and how well it keeps time.
Automatic Movement
A self-winding movement: a rotor converts wrist motion into mainspring tension.
Balance Wheel
The oscillator: a weighted wheel and hairspring that set the watch's rate.
Escapement
The escapement meters energy and gives the balance its impulse.
Manual Wind Movement
Hand-wound: crown, ratchet wheel and click convert turning into stored torque.
Mainspring Barrel
The power source: a coiled spring in a toothed drum, released in a controlled way.
Quartz Movement
A crystal oscillator, a divider chain and a stepper motor instead of a balance.
