Overview
A cleaning basket is a lidded stainless mesh container that holds every part of a movement through the cleaning process. Its job is to keep parts together, keep them off the tank floor, and let solvent and cavitation reach every surface.
Good baskets have a fine enough mesh to retain the smallest screw and a lid that latches, because a part lost in a solvent tank is a part gone. Many have a mesh fine enough to hold a balance complete without the staff touching anything.
The basket also imposes discipline. Parts go in separated, not nested, and delicate items — the balance, the pallet fork, anything plated or painted — are often cleaned separately or by hand. A basket is not a licence to put everything in at once.
What matters about it
- Keeps every part of a movement together
- Prevents parts resting on the tank floor
- Open mesh lets solvent and cavitation through
- Latching lid prevents losses
- Fine mesh even retains balance screws
Practical notes
- Clean one movement per load; a crowded basket does not clean.
- Keep the balance and pallet fork in a separate small container.
- Rinse and dry the basket itself — a dirty basket re-contaminates the next load.
- Check the mesh for tears before loading; a hole is a lost screw.
